The gigantic Site C dam in northern British Columbia has started producing electricity, BC Hydro announces.

In a statement, the state-owned company said that one of six first production units has started operating, after the completion of commissioning tests.

The site is expected to be fully operational by fall 2025. It will add 1,100 megawatts of provincial capacity, increasing current supply by approximately 8%.

The population should not approach the reservoir area for at least a year after it has been filled, due to unstable terrain and floating debris, which pose potential dangers.

BC Hydro says filling the reservoir should be completed later this fall.
