Senior civil servant Philippe Lonné has been appointed director general of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the largest cultural establishment in the country, and will take office on Wednesday October 30, 2024, the institution announced Monday October 28 in a press release.

Philippe Lonné, born in 1980, succeeds Kevin Riffault who was appointed in 2021. “State Administrator”, former deputy general director of the Olympic Works Delivery Company (Solideo) between 2019 and 2021, he was also a former advisor to Jean Castex then to Élisabeth Borne in Matignon, the BnF specified in the press release.

Il “knows well” also the Ministry of Culture for having been deputy director of the cabinet of former minister Françoise Nyssen, added this source.

Since May, he was a member of the “Reconstruction” mission set up by the State to emerge from the violent crisis in New Caledonia, according to the press release.

The head of the BnF is thus completely renewed. Last April, the cultural establishment welcomed a new president, the historian Gilles Pécout, who had a career as a senior civil servant at the university, then in National Education, diplomacy and now culture.

Heir to the library of the kings of France, the BnF is one of the best-endowed institutions in the world with cultural riches from all eras and all regions of the globe. They range from the first currencies in the history of humanity to video games, including manuscripts, rare books, objects that bear witness to history or works of art (prints, photographs, etc.) . It has more than 2,200 agents, for a budget of more than 250 million euros.
