Two young residents carried out a mission within the Archives of the city of Laval and Laval agglomeration. This, as part of a Pocket Money project, a scheme open to young people aged 16 to 18.

This initiative is a first for these projects. There were similar experiences in other services, and we wanted to offer it,” explains Léna Auduberteau, responsible for the municipal archives.

From pushing back archive boxes to dusting off order registers, Solène, 16 years old, and Dimitri, 17 years old, spent four half-days with municipal agents. It’s a good experience and also a way to keep busy during the holidays,” specifies the young girl.

If the two Laval students do not intend to study the profession of archivist, they have discovered the workings of it. It takes a lot of work. You have to be rigorous in data management explains Dimitri.

Sort, dust, locate archives

Apart from the work carried out, the two young Laval residents discovered how the service works. The idea is to make them aware of the issue of archives and that they can come back later if they need them for personal or professional research,” adds Elisabeth Dupleix, e-archivist for the city of Laval.

According to Bruno Bertier, first deputy mayor of Laval, this initiative is a good experience in the professional world and the opportunity to discover the importance of a city's archives .

This experience will be repeated in future citizen projects. If a young person is interested, and wishes to participate, they can contact our service, if this can create vocations concludes Léna Auduberteau.

Municipal archives are open to the public by appointment on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. 1, rue Prosper-Brou.
