Saturday October 12, 2024, the inauguration of the comic strip took place under the market hall, in the center of the village of La Carneille, delegated commune of Athis-Val-de-Rouvre (Orne).

The idea of creating a comic strip on the history of his village germinated in Claude Guibout's mind in 2022.

This project took shape following his meeting with the Norman designer Denis Renard.

The association La Carneille in History was then created to finance this project up to €12,000. The stock of the first 700 copies having expired, the reissue of 300 comic strips was the opportunity to inaugurate the work with the various partners and elected officials.

Cultural capital of Athis-Val-de-Rouvre

The officials present praised the work of Claude Guibout, kingpin of this achievement with the members of the association who contributed to this success. Alain Lange, mayor of Athis-Val-de-Rouvre, congratulated and thanked them.

For François Baille, vice-president of culture at Flers agglo, “the objective has been achieved, the comic strip is easy to read, from the youngest to the oldest. We learn things and discover places we don't know. The boarding is successful, it is a real pleasure to read it ».

Transmission of heritage

For MP Jérôme Nury, “comics are the best way to transmit history to the entire population and especially to the youngest.” The fund for the development of community life also supported this project.

“It is essential to measure what came before us to think about the futurewe are supposed to know where we come from, and here more than elsewhere, we have difficulty understanding the built heritage due to the bombings.”

Teamwork

The designer, Denis Renard shared a montage explaining the different steps necessary to the creation of a comic strip and the various techniques used. It is these multiple back and forths between the artist and the members of the association which made it possible to obtain this final result.

For these twenty members, all agree that “the proofreading work and the search for veracity were fascinating. Everyone found something differentwe didn’t focus on the same details,” adds Gine Guibout.

New project

Copies will be available to borrow from the media libraries of Flers, Athis-de-l'Orne and Ségrie-. The comic is on sale for €20in the shops of Athis-Val-de-Rouvre (press house, La Gine de La Carneille grocery store, Lire et Flâner in Ségrie-Fontaine), as well as at the Quartier libre de Flers bookstore.

Despite repeated requests for a second volume during this ceremony, the members of the association announced that this will not be the caseand that they are already working “on the creation of plaques, which would retrace the history of the businesses and artisans of the town of La Carneille in the 20th century”, announces Gine Guibout.
