The event gave rise to lunar scenes. Pedestrians, cyclists and even… foxes were seen walking on an A13 motorway completely empty of vehicles. On April 18, the Hauts-de-Seine prefecture imposed the temporary closure (but for an indefinite period) of the Paris-Vaucresson section of the A13, between interchange 5 and the ring road. The appearance of a crack near Saint-Cloud (Hauts-de-Seine), probably due to the construction site of an underground car park under the Grand Siècle museum, made vehicle traffic dangerous. The authorities have therefore invited motorists to use alternative routes: the A12, the N12 and the N118. In the process, the Ile-de-France interdepartmental roads directorate (DiRIF), the Center for studies and expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and development (Cerema) and companies carried out a diagnosis around the crack, and started the repair work.

Up to 300 kilometers of traffic jams

Immediately, fears of monster traffic jams arose. Several elected officials, including Valérie Pécresse, the president of the Ile-de-France region, asked for the A14 and the A86 duplex to be free while the work on the A13 is carried out, to avoid. any saturation of alternative routes, the closed section being used daily by 500,000 vehicles on average. Cyclists’ associations have at the same time suggested that the portion closed to cars be open to bicycles during the work.

A crack near Saint-Cloud, probably due to the construction of an underground car park under the Musée du Grand Siècle, made traffic dangerous.

Neither one nor the other was heard, and traffic was particularly busy on the alternative routes during the week – there were 300 km of traffic jams on Monday April 22, for example – as well as during the weekend, particularly during the May 1st bridge.

The structure was finally partially reopened in the province-Paris direction on Friday May 10, but only for light vehicles, and on a single lane. The DiRIF also conceded that this would not be enough to guarantee the flow of traffic and advised continuing to use alternative routes. The Paris-province part remains closed. The entire lane must not be returned to all vehicle traffic before the end of June.
