International Biodiversity Day 2024

On this International Biodiversity Day, the National Regroupment of Regional Environmental Councils of Quebec (RNCREQ) and the Laurentides Regional Environmental Council (CRE Laurentides) join the voices of the world to celebrate biodiversity and highlight its importance for the future of the planet.

The RNCREQ highlights the commitment of regional environmental councils (CRE), having led to 670 commitment resolutions with a view to the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework for Biodiversity.

Themed “Contribute to the Plan,” the day is a call to action to inspire diverse stakeholders, including governments, indigenous peoples, local communities, NGOs, legislators, businesses and individuals, to demonstrate their support for the implementation of the biodiversity plan. Biodiversity, essential to life on earth and the well-being of communities, as well as nature-based solutions, are tools for adapting to climate change.

The CREs, including the CRE Laurentides, welcome their participation in this call to action. Their mobilization led to the transmission of 670 commitment resolutions to the Minister of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks, Benoit Charette. These resolutions come from various sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, industries, tourism and health, demonstrating the widespread commitment to biodiversity.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted at COP15 on biodiversity in December 2022, represents a global commitment to reverse the decline of biodiversity by 2030. Prime Minister François Legault also committed to providing Quebec of a strategic plan, the Nature 2030 Plan, to preserve and improve biodiversity.

Collective work, consultation and collaboration are essential to implement concrete measures aimed at conserving and restoring biological diversity. The CREs play a key role in mobilizing and supporting local and regional actors to this end.

The RNCREQ and CRE Laurentides are impatiently awaiting the official unveiling of the 2030 Nature Plan and the 2024-2027 Action Plan, which will provide the necessary means for all stakeholders to achieve the set objectives.
