An oasis courtyard has taken root within the La Justice school group. The first of its kind in (Val-d’Oise)! The new space was inaugurated last week in the presence of Jean-Paul Jeandon, Ps mayor of Cergy, and Alexandre Pueyo (Lr), departmental councilor of Cergy 2. “This project improves the well-being of students by providing more greenery, shaded areas and better management of high heat. A great commitment to climate challenges,” underlines the mayor of Cergy.

“Massive revegetation”

“By supporting the transformation of schoolyards, the Department breathes new life into places that become generous, rich in biodiversity and bearers of humanity,” continues Alexandre Pueyo. This oasis courtyard project is a model of what we call a nature-based solution. With vegetation that doubles the surface area of the open ground, with the installation of 24 trees and 8 vines, we allow children to evolve in an environment where the tree, the wind, and the shade become their allies. »

In collaboration with the Council of Architecture, Urban Planning and the Environment (Caue) 95 and after a phase of co-consultation with educational teams and schoolchildren, the City of Cergy has redesigned the spaces to encourage sharing between children and create educational facilities around nature. “More than just a playground, this space has been redesigned to offer children a greener, cooler, soothing place adapted to the climatic challenges of tomorrow,” indicates the municipality.

“This transformation consisted of creating a varied fun offering so that the courtyard becomes a place of experimentation and discovery through play,” reports the Department. The project authorized “a complete refresh of the courtyard, with a new covering, massive planting, rainwater management, a carefully chosen plant palette, and wooden furniture. »

The development of this oasis courtyard, 321,000 euros in total, was financed by the City of Cergy with the support of the Ile-de- Region, the Val-d’Oise Department and the Seine Water Agency -. By the end of the year, mini-oasis will be created in other school groups (Tilleuls, Linandes, Châteaux, Village, Ponceau and Touleuses). In 2025, two other school groups will benefit from their oasis courtyard.
