In Lyon, dying trees urgently felled to protect local residents

After noting the worrying state of certain trees, particularly at Place Bellecour, the Métropole de Lyon is proceeding with the felling of seven cherry and lime trees.

The Métropole de Lyon is currently carrying out tree maintenance work in the 2nd arrondissement, rue de la République. A team of pruners then noted that one of the trees located between rue Maupin and rue des Archers showed significant signs of rot – 50% of the total circumference of the trunk – and represented a danger for many passers-by. . He was therefore shot dead on the spot on Friday.

Six trees cut, five others pruned Place Bellecour

Same observation at Place Bellecour. After checking the health of the trees, six of them, dying or dead, will be felled this Tuesday, May 21. In addition, five others will be pruned while awaiting felling this fall. These are mainly cherry and lime trees.

“When the situation becomes dangerous, it is our responsibility to cut down dying trees to keep passers-by safe, assures Pierre Athanaze, vice-president in charge of the environment, in a press release. All these trees will be replaced at the next planting period,
next fall.”
