Municipal elections in Schaerbeek: a clear defeat for the List of Mayor Défi Bernard Clerfayt

The partial results (40 offices out of 75 counted) in Schaerbeek indicate a victory for the PS which would come first with 20.8% of the votes ahead of the MR & Les Engagés 1030 list (17.2%). Ecolo-Groen would come in 3rd position (down) with 16.8%, followed by PTB-PVDA (13.7%). The List of Mayor Défi Bernard Clerfayt crashes with 11.6%, a very clear decline compared to the 2018 elections (-20.3%). The LB would therefore only arrive in 5th position ahead of the Team Fouad Ahidar list (9.7%). These results, although partial, indicate a real earthquake in the city of donkeys and a disavowal for the mayor Bernard Clerfayt.

During the 2018 municipal elections, Bernard Clerfayt received 8,022 votes, the first score in the municipality. At the time, his mayor’s list had collected 17 seats, then joining forces with Ecolo, 10 seats. But over the course of the legislature, several elected officials left the LB ship to join the ranks of the opposition. More than a year ago, the majority officially found itself in the minority.

In Schaerbeek, 10 lists were running in the elections this Sunday, October 13 compared to nine in 2018. The PS, which has lost the mayoralty in each election, had decided to place Hasan Koyuncu, regional deputy, followed by Justine Harzé at the head of the list. The MR, associated with the Engagés, after announcing the name of Minister Hadja Lahbib at the top of the list, had finally decided to entrust the first place to Audrey Henry followed by Cédric Mahieu, leader of the Engagés. Ecolo, banking on stability, was led by Vincent Vanhalewyn, outgoing first alderman, and declared mayoral candidate. Georges Verzin, former alderman, outgoing municipal councilor, led a citizens’ list 1030 Ensemble on which former alderman Sait Kose, ex-DéFI, also appeared.

While in 2012 and 2018, the LB had publicly reported pre-electoral agreements, notably with Ecolo, well before the election, it had decided to go to the polls this time with its hands free.
