A week to (re)discover the kingdom of Eric Rohmer in Tulle, from October 16 to 19

From October 16 to 19, the first Rohmer Week will offer meetings, screenings, exhibitions and workshops around the work and life of Éric Rohmer, under the aegis of Portuguese filmmaker Rita Azevedo Gomes.

This will be a first. The La Maison Rohmer association, leading the promotion of the family home, rue de la Barrière, of Maurice Schérant, now the filmmaker Éric Rohmer, has set up a program of events and meetings to (re )discover his cinema and his personality, from October 16 to 19.

A week prefigured, since 2020, by multiple events and meetings, in partnership in particular with the Brive Cinema Festival and L’Empreinte-scène nationale.

For its first edition, its godmother is the Portuguese director Rita Azevedo Gomes, who notably adapted the theatrical text Le Trio en E flatby Rohmer, a film that received much attention during its presentation in Berlin. “I was quite young when I saw the first Rohmers in the late 60s/early 70s,” remembers Rita Azevedo Gomes.

A Portuguese filmmaker for godmother

“Fortunately, these films were not banned by the Portuguese censors, who were irascible at the time. I remember a certain fury from the public and the Lisbon critics around each release of a new Rohmer. The Collector, My night at Maud’s, Claire’s knee, The Marquise of O introduced me to his cinematographic art. »

His work is of crucial importance for auteur cinema and in the history of cinema in general.

What did they bring to his own cinematographic work? “I don’t know how to consciously establish a direct relationship between what I make and Rohmer’s work,” admits the director. But all the films, like painting, music, literature, that we love stay with us until the memory fades. »

And the importance of a Rohmer Week? “I believe that Eric Rohmer’s cinema will always be a realm to discover and explore,” says his godmother. His work is of crucial importance for auteur cinema and in the history of cinema in general. »

Is it difficult? Certainly, she admits, “but it was never easy, like Dreyer, Oliveira or Bergman, for example. I believe that if we like films, the difficulty in following or understanding them makes them more interesting, since they require us to think and discuss. Rohmer Week will surely be very enriching in this regard. »
