SENEGAL-ENVIRONNEMENT / Saraya isolated from the rest of the country by the overflow of the Falémé and backwaters (witness) – Senegalese press agency

Saraya, Oct 9 (APS) – The department of Saraya in the region of Kédougou (south-east) is cut off from the rest of the country because of the overflow of the Falémé river, the main tributary of the Senegal river, and backwaters, emerging from their beds following the torrential rains that occurred Tuesday and Wednesday in the area, a community development agent told APS.

”Users are blocked at Khossanto and Sabodala, because all the backwaters are full throughout the area. Currently, we have emergencies, we cannot travel, and the economy is slowing down because of the overflowing waters,” Dialy Bambo Danfakha warned.

While traveling in the commune of Missirah Sirimana, Dialy Bambo Danfakha reports that the department of Saraya, a town located 60 kilometers from the regional capital, Kédougou, is under water.

”Reaching the communes of Bembou, Khossanto, Sabodala, Madina Baffé and Missirah Sirimina has become a major obstacle course,” he said.

He declares that “these overflows of the Falémé river and the backwaters of the Saraya department prevented the employees of a local mining company from “going to work”.

”Every year, we have this blockage in Saraya where water has even arrived in the concessions in Khossanto, Bembou, Boto, Missirah Sirimana and Madina Baffé,” laments Mr. Danfakha, community development agent in Saraya.
