The Canton of Vaud has set up a “task force” on street dealing, announced Tuesday the State Councilor in charge of Security Vassilis Venizelos. Greater police presence on the street, “punches” operations, perimeter bans and intensified returns of incarcerated traffickers at the end of their sentences are among the new measures.

The State Councilor responded to an oral question on street dealing which reflected the recent call from the communes on this subject. Particularly concerned by this problem, Lausanne, Yverdon and Vevey have, in fact, written a letter to the Vaud Council of State to request the holding of meetings of the penal chain and public health.

Vassilis Venizelos was keen to point out that the Canton had not waited for this letter from the cities to act, moreover describing the “unacceptable” situation in certain places and urban neighborhoods. He reassured these municipalities by announcing an upcoming “extraordinary” meeting on street dealing with their respective trustees. With the aim of holding meetings on the subject.

Rise to power

In the process, the minister announced new measures from the Canton to adapt and strengthen its action plan presented in 2021. Highlight: a “street deal task force” set up since the start of the political school year in August. “It will gain momentum in the coming months,” he said.

These repressive actions will be targeted and coordinated to disrupt drug trafficking networks and trace drug networks.

Concretely, a stronger permanent police presence will be deployed in the streets of the cities in question and “strikes” operations will take place at the same time in the coming months. “These repressive actions will be targeted and coordinated to disrupt drug trafficking networks and trace drug networks,” said Vassilis Venizelos.

Perimeter bans will also be imposed. The Canton also plans to intensify the return of incarcerated traffickers at the end of their sentences. Closer collaboration is also planned with the other cantons and even with the Confederation. Clearly, according to the head of the Department of Youth, Environment and Security (DJES), “the repressive system will increase”.
