The sky was adorned with sublime pink hues during the night from Friday to Saturday May 11, 2024. Northern lights could be observed in France from Pas-de-Calais to Corsica, via Champagne-Ardenne .

On his X account, photographer Thierry Michel observed the Northern Lights from the Ardennes, which took on pink but also green colors as is often observed in the Nordic countries.
Photographer Mathieu Rivrin shared an aurora borealis above Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, with these same green and pink hues.
The Northern Lights have even been photographed in inner Paris, despite the light pollution.
Further south in Caussols, in the Alpes-Maritimes.
Rarely in France, the Northern Lights were visible to the naked eye as here in Gard, according to the Keraunos storm and tornado observatory.
Peak activity in 2024
This spectacle, rare in our latitudes, was caused by an “extreme” geomagnetic storm. A phenomenon of such intensity had not been seen since 2003. Other northern lights could be visible in France this year. “The sun continues its peak of activity until 2024. After that we will have to wait eleven years…”explained last February, Benjamin Poupard, deputy director of the Reims planetarium.
