The summer season is upon Quebec’s doorstep, but lasting heat is still a long way off. However, summer temperatures have already hit part of the country.

An atmospheric trough stationed in the east of the country is causing cooler temperatures in Quebec. On the other side of the continent, in British Columbia, it is quite the opposite. A crest brings warmth worthy of the summer season.

About ten degrees of difference at times between east and west

This Thursday, May 9, a mercury of 30.2°C was recorded at the Pemberton airport, in British Columbia. On the Kamloops side, the mercury reached 27.8°C, while in Osoyoos, we are talking about 28.4°C.

HEAT 1 - WEST (2)

In Quebec, temperatures are around 15°C. Although heat surges above 20°C have been reported, summer conditions have still not set in in the province. In 2024, the thermometer with the highest reading was 23.6°C in Gatineau on May 4.

HEAT 2 - QC

When will summer return to the province?

“The trough should remain over Quebec for several days, while the crest on the western side of the country should end up losing intensity towards the beginning of next week,” explains Carol-Ann Veilleux, meteorologist.

HEAT 3 - WEATHER (1)

In the east of the country, there is a risk of a small rise of hot air by next weekend. We will then be treated to a brief return above 20°C, but the trough will still dominate for several days.

Remember that astronomical summer will officially begin on June 21.
