Member of Parliament for Puy-de-Dôme, president of the communist group in the national assembly and candidate for the European elections on Léon Deffontaines’ list, André Chassaigne was passing through Aude. He went to meet retirees from agriculture and the wine industry in Camplong. Then he led a public meeting on the theme “Solidarity with Cuba” in Narbonne.

At the origin of a bill to guarantee farmers a pension equivalent to 85% of the minimum wage, André Chassaigne could not avoid this meeting: campaigning for the European elections of June 9, he went to Camplong- d’Aude to hear the words of the retired section of the Regional Federation of Farmers’ Unions. The wine and wine industry was also there. “As part of the campaign and as a member of the European Commission and referent of the common agricultural policy, I wanted to know the situation. Especially since I draw up reports on national strategic plans, which are the variation of the CAP in France”.

From these meetings, André Chassaigne took away concrete actions to take to parliament and at European level if he is elected. To know “a fight to be waged so that the Mediterranean territories faced with drought and climatic upheavals receive compensation to compensate for natural handicaps. Viticulture could be part of the CAP and benefit from it.”

If we do not support the wine crisis, we are preparing for a future that will cost society more

Furthermore, André Chassaigne wondered why viticulture “is not affected by the Egalim law” (for the balance of commercial relations in the agricultural sector)? “The guarantee of remuneration which must be given to wine growers does not exist. They are faced with trading and those who stand up by demanding remunerative prices will then be sanctioned. Wine growers should come together in a producer organization in order to plan the wine market, assess a floor price and establish framework contracts. This will give rise to a written question to the government.

This new visit to Aude also allowed the deputy and candidate to “become aware of the consequences if tomorrow the vines disappear or weaken too much: nature will take over, wild boars will develop as well as the risk of fires”. Which makes him think that “if we do not support the wine crisis, we are preparing for a future that will cost society more.”

Solidarity with Cuba

Passing through Narbonne, André Chassaigne relayed the solidarity campaign with Cuba launched by the PCF. “Cuba is in a situation of blockade which has been strengthened with Trump. The country is resisting in terrible conditions the asphyxiation organized by the United States: American law, through the use of the dollar, is extra -territorialized and this blockade on Cuba is imposed on all countries on the planet that use the dollar. It is extremely serious. André Chassaigne took the opportunity to dedicate his latest book, “Cuba, a star in the night”, published in 2023 by Temps des Cerises.
