An Edelweiss plane skidded on the runway at Zurich airport. Sust is now investigating the incident.
A minor incident occurred last October at Zurich Airport, when an Edelweiss Air Airbus A320 suddenly veered to the left just before taking off from runway 32, as can be seen on the Youtube video above. The pilots reacted immediately and stopped the plane.
The Swiss Security Investigation Service (Sust) described the incident as serious and published a preliminary report on what happened on Friday.
According to the preliminary report, the aircraft “significantly deviated from the runway centerline” during the takeoff roll, just before reaching decision speed V1. This speed marks the point up to which a takeoff can be safely aborted. The cockpit crew was therefore able to intervene just in time.
No injuries
The Airbus A320 was traveling to Faro, Portugal, with 106 passengers on board, although the plane is designed for 174 travelers. There were no injuries and the plane was only slightly damaged despite emergency braking.
The exact reason for the incident remains unclear at this time, as the preliminary report only constitutes a provisional assessment of the event and does not contain any conclusions. According to its own indications, Sust is continuing its investigations to determine the cause of the plane’s sudden departure from the runway.
