Legal gold mines once again targeted by armed gangs. Two sites were targeted by robbers this May 9, in the morning. It was in the Paul Isnard sector, in western Guyanese.

Two legal mining sites were robbed on Thursday May 9. The events took place in the Paul Isnard sectorin Saint-Laurent du Maroni. The robbery began shortly after 7:30 a.m.

According to the gendarmerie, the thieves attacked a first construction site, before taking over a second one, located several kilometers away. According to our information, the armed gang stole one or two vehicles from the first site to get to the second construction site.

There were reportedly five to six robbers armed with a shotgun and automatic weapons. The criminals left with gold, without specifying at this stage the quantity stolen.

On February 21, a legal gold panning site in Saint-Laurent du Maroni was also robbed by an armed gang. According to our information, at least two men were injured. Several similar events had also occurred in 2023 and even earlier. Professionals in the gold mining sector have been denouncing, for years, the violence to which they are victims in legal mines.
