According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the collision occurred around 5:15 a.m. Thursday morning on the Gédéon-Ouimet bridge, which connects Laval to Boisbriand, heading north.

The provincial police force said the man had stopped in the right lane to change a tire after a flat tire.

“While the driver got out of his vehicle to change the tire, a van could not have avoided him and hit him, before leaving the scene,” explained Sergeant Elizabeth Marquis-Guy , who is a spokesperson for the SQ.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reconstructionists specializing in collision scenes must go to the scene to clarify the causes and circumstances surrounding this event.

For the moment, the SQ is not commenting on the continuation of the investigation as to what will happen to the motorist who fled after the collision. No description of the vehicle involved was provided.

Due to the ongoing police investigation, two out of three traffic lanes had to be closed on the Gédéon-Ouimet bridge Thursday morning, which caused heavy congestion.

According to Quebec 511, the duration of the closure is indefinite.
