Fifty and fifty years after his death, Cajarc’s tribute to Georges Pompidou

Tuesday May 14, at 6 p.m., the Maison des arts Georges et Claude Pompidou is organizing an evening tribute to Georges Pompidou, to mark the 50th anniversary of his death. It will take place in the presence of Claire Raulin, prefect of Lot, Jacques Viratelle, mayor of Cajarc, and Richard Lagrange, president of the MAGCP.

The evening will continue with a stroll through the village around archive images, to the Françoise-Sagan space and will be followed by a moment of conviviality around a drink offered by the town hall. The archives and testimonies will recall the strong bond that was forged between the former President of the Republic and Cajarc where the Pompidou family regularly stayed.

Mayor for a few seconds in 1965

During the municipal elections of March 1965, Georges Pompidou was to be elected mayor of Cajarc. He only remained there for a few seconds, because he declined this honor due to his functions as Prime Minister, contenting himself with retaining the function of municipal councilor until his election to the Presidency of the Republic on June 15, 1969.

Intellectual and man of the land, banker and lover of poetry, simple and accessible, he knew how to conquer the hearts of all the inhabitants of the territory.
“Calm and rest are the reasons that brought me among you. I come to the Lot to relax and rest, but I remain available to the inhabitants of Cajarc to examine their problems with them. »

Fifty years later, the people of Cajarco remember this exceptional era.
This is why the municipality of Cajarc and the Maison des arts Georges et Claude Pompidou are jointly organizing this tribute to President Pompidou on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death.
