For the month of May, the community of communes of Plateau Picard, in partnership with Géovélo, Rainjoy and the Leclerc shopping center in Saint-Just-en-Chaussée, invites residents of the area to participate in the Mai à Vélo challenge from 1er May to May 31.

Cycling to encourage gentle mobility

For its first participation, the intercommunality indicates that Mai à vélo is part of a global project with a view to developing the use of cycling as a leisure activity. The general director of services, Geoffrey Fumaroli, also explains that Plateau Picard wants to encourage travel by bicycle for professional use.

While the community of municipalities wishes to develop soft mobility, this challenge is also a way of encouraging part of the population to change their habits and turn to an alternative mode of travel: “younger people, for example, could use their bike for home-school journeys” explains Geoffrey Fumaroli.

In 2022, the intercommunity was the winner of the AVELO 2 call for projects launched by ADEME. “In our action program, we integrated the development of an ambassador plan for two cycling challenges” indicates the general director of services. This program resulted in the participation of Plateau Picard in the Hauts-de-France mobility challenge for employees and in the eco-mobility challenge for schools: two participations that the intercommunality intends to renew this year.

How to participate in the challenge?

To take part in the challenge, you must first download the free Geovelo application and register with a valid email address and join the “Communauté de Communes du Plateau Picard” community: subsequently, you will have to pedal, equipped with your smartphone with an internet connection. The application will then record the journeys.

At the end of the challenge, the participants who have covered the most kilometers will be rewarded. Around ten prizes are up for grabs: among the prizes to be won are numerous visibility equipment, as well as a protective bubble against the rain and the cold. The overall winner of the challenge will be able to win an electrically assisted bicycle offered by the Leclerc shopping center in Saint-Just-en-Chaussée.

If the challenge is just beginning, the intercommunity hopes to create emulation and why not get residents back on the saddle… of cycling. “If in discussions between colleagues people challenge each other, that will be a plus.”
