With the return of good weather, the air quality is degraded in Ille-et-Vilaine on May 8 and 9, 2024 according to AirBreizh readings. Ille-et-Vilaine, however, is not the only department affected in Brittany. Côtes-d’Armor, Finistère and Morbihan also have air quality “degraded” for the next two days.

The air quality index makes it possible to characterize in a simple and global way the air we breathe. It is issued by Air Breizh following forecasts made “by analysis of data from measuring stations, air quality modeling and meteorological information”specifies the structure on its website.

Since 1er January 2021, it is determined from the following five pollutants: fine particles (PM10), very fine particles (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).

What are the health consequences?

In the viewfinder this Wednesday and Thursday, there is first PM 2.5. These polluting particles are the finest (with a diameter of 2.5 microns). By their size, the latter therefore infiltrate the deepest into the respiratory tract and can, in the most serious cases, impair respiratory function as a whole.

The other pollutant that degrades air quality on May 8 and 9 is ozone (O3). In too large quantities, this gas has harmful effects on health. It is particularly capable “penetrating deep into the lungs, ozone at high concentrations causes inflammation and hyper-reactivity of the bronchi. Irritation of the nose and throat usually occurs, accompanied by difficulty breathing. Eye irritations are also observed »recalls Air Breizh.
