in Vendée, mother and daughter bring the memory of slavery to life

In the video, we see a young woman, 14 years old, barefoot on the asphalt, dressed in a large blue and white skirt. She dances timidly at first, then, little by little, almost imperceptibly, we see her free herself from her fears and let herself be carried away by the songs which say, in Reunion Creole: ” I am a princess maroon (slave). I arrived on a boat, chained, in pain and because of my color, my freedom was taken away. »

It was April 20, 2024, at the OPS hall in Fontenay-le-Comte, during the inauguration of the mobile slavery memorial. This young woman is Ly-Anne Kitzie Tathoué. Despite her fears and her memories of racist bullying, experienced when she was little, she showed herself alone in front of the public, as she is.

“I am proud of her because she managed to overcome her fear, comments Émilie Burel, her mother, who sang that day, while her daughter danced. For her age, she is very engaged in the history of our ancestors. I managed, a little, I think, to instill that in him. It affects us enormously. »
