Why has Liège become a “too dirty city”? Here is the response from Raoul Hedebouw, the head of the PTB

Raoul Hedebouw appears on the PTB list for the municipal councils in Liège, but is not the head. The party leader pins the MR and the PS on their responsibilities for the cleanliness of the city.

One of the concerns citizens have about their municipality is public cleanliness. Raoul Hedebouw, who appears on the PTB list in Liège, returns to the particular case of the Cité ardente.

“Cleanliness in Liège is managed by the MR with a MR-PS majority,” underlines the party leader. It is in fact Gilles Foret who is the alderman in charge of cleanliness. “Why is he handling her so badly?”asks Raoul Hedebouw, on the set of The Last Straight Line. “He decided in 2019 to reduce the number of public trash cans from 800 to 400,” or a number divided by two.

“The number of workers cleaning our streets has been reduced in some neighborhoods from 6 to 2 workers,” he continues. “So it was the MR who defined all that”in order to save money. “The worst thing is that Mr. Gilles Fauret of the MR, the day he put us to the vote to reduce 400 public trash cans, he proposed increasing the waste tax from 140 to 165 euros.” An injustice according to the head of the PTB. “With the MR, we see what happens: more taxes paid and fewer services provided.”

Facing Martin Buxant, Raoul Hedebouw insists on the fact that the PT “will fight to have clean cities”, and this must involve the refinancing of the public service, according to the latter. “The MR has just reduced the number of street sweepers on contracts, why don’t we rehire people for contracts with real workers?” Raoul Hedebouw believes that giving the work of public cleanliness as work of general interest – as submitted by competing parties – is a “issue”. “Making people work for free destroys all social status.”

“Liège is a city that is too dirty”finally affirms the head of the PTB. And for him, the culprits have all been found. “It’s because of the MR and the PS who mismanage our cities, it must be said.”
