In order to face climate change, the Geneva State Council wants to increase the shaded area in the city by planting 150,000 trees in fifteen years. Objective: reach 30% canopy in 2070, compared to 23% today.
Adopted on Wednesday by the government, the urban area arborization strategy will make it possible to increase the canopy by 1% by 2040 by planting young trees and by 7% in 2070, thanks to their growth. The equivalent of more than 554 additional hectares will be shaded.
‘The challenge is to find space for these new plantations,’ Antonio Hodgers, president of the Council of State and head of the Territorial Department, told the media. The needs of trees must be integrated into project planning in order to plan plantings in the ground. The strategy also aims to strengthen the conservation of existing trees.
