Land problem in Senegal: The Mediator of the Republic calls for better regulation

XALIMANEWS- The Mediator of the Republic, Demba Kandji calls for better land regulation in Senegal. It thus calls for in-depth reflections.

Indeed, in collaboration with the Association of former governors of civil society movements, the Association of village chiefs and other actors in the sylvopastoral zone, the mediator of the Republic organized a workshop for discussions on the land. A meeting to discuss problems and issues.

For Demba Kandji, “Senegal’s major concern is land. Where live ? Where to cultivate? So, we undertook this reflection to try, within the framework of our powers of proposal and suggestion, to establish directives to be entrusted to those who decide.” He specifies, in particular, that the aim of this reflection workshop is to make proposals in the direction of settling for good the “nebulae” which surround land.

Also, underlines, this conclave comes at its right time “in view of the complaints which are more or less recurrent in relation to the alienations of land in rural areas of which the peasants complain and for which the mediator is contacted by local elected officials and agents of the ‘administration”. Hence, “the need to protect rural land,” he insisted.
The latest events, namely the cessation of construction on the Western Corniche of Dakar, have sharpened curiosity about this land affair. And for the Mediator of the Republic the West Corniche ”is only a small strip compared to what is happening in the country”. On this, the land focal point of the National Framework for Consultation and Cooperation of Rural People (CNCR) and the Framework for Reflection on Land in Senegal, Babacar Diop does not beat around the bush. For him, we must move towards consensual, participatory and inclusive land reform.
