The famous cinema in the 6th arrondissement of Paris closed its doors in November 2023, due to a lack of spectators. It will be replaced by a sports store in a few months.

From cinema to sport, there is only one step. The legendary Parisian cinema Le Bretagne, which closed its doors in November 2023, will be replaced in a few months by a sports store, the town hall of the 6th arrondissement of Paris told BFM Paris Île-de-France, confirming information from ‘News Paris.

A building permit was submitted in December 2023 and authorized on April 11. However, the permit is not yet completely final, because it is in the appeal period, specifies the town hall of the 6th arrondissement to BFM Paris Île-de-France. And work could begin in September or October for an opening in 2025.

This building permit aims to modify the facade of the building, the installation of closing grilles or even the repair of the interior courtyard. The work also includes the demolition of 445 m² and the construction of 757 m² of surface area in order to upgrade the floors.

20,000 spectators in 2023

Brittany, an apartment establishment in Pathé in the Montparnasse district, held its very last session on Tuesday November 13. Inaugurated on September 27, 1961, it was a real institution in the 6th arrondissement when it was created, one of the largest theaters in Paris considered as an “exclusive cinema” which only showed new releases.

Bought in 2009 by Pathé, Le Bretagne no longer attracted crowds in recent years. “In 2023, 20,000 spectators pushed open the door of Bretagne compared to a total of 700,000 expected in 2023 for our three other cinemas right next door: Pathé Parnasse, Miramar and Montparnos,” explained Aurélien Bosc, president of Pathé Cinémas, at Figaro.
