And in terms of gardens, the National Archeology Museum of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is well endowed: Henry IV magnified the park by having six terraces built there at the end of the 16th century which went down to the Seine, galleries pierced with arcades and sumptuous caves. Under the reign of Louis XIII, the gardens lost their splendor and it was Louis XIV who entrusted to Ours the care of creating new ones. The latter gave the site its letters of nobility by creating the famous embroidery flowerbeds.

As to English landscaped garden, created in 1845 by Loaisel de Tréogate, engineer of the Crown domain, it was planted on a plot of forest and presents remarkable trees, some of which are several hundred years old. • “The musicality of the royal gardens at the beginning of the 17th century”
    Saturday June 1, 2:30 p.m.

Making Nature heard and simulating its sonic qualities is an important aspect of garden art. This dimension asserted itself during the Renaissance where the musicality of water, wind and animal song was often underlined, or supplemented, by various constructions: gushing fountains, singing bird aviaries, hydraulic organs, pavilions, exedra and other spaces used for concerts, etc. At the beginning of the 17th century, this musical dimension was further amplified, in France, by the vogue for theater, “entertainments” and ballets: true sound theaters, the large gardens were also scenographic spaces where the musicality of the place was amplified by architecture. We will consider all these aspects under the reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII from the royal gardens of Fontainebleau and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, giving all the space they deserve to the Château Neuf, its numerous fountains and its automaton caves.
