A call for an “anti-repression” rally in Brest on Thursday May 9, 2024 has been broadcast for several days on social networks. The meeting is announced at 5 p.m., at the Château tram station. Faced with the risks of disturbances to public order represented by this type of grouping organized without prior declaration and within the framework of the Vigipirate plan, raised to the “emergency attack” level in force since January 24, 2024, the prefect of Finistère took this May 7, 2024 an order aimed at prohibiting this undeclared gathering. This demonstration is therefore prohibited from Thursday May 9 at 3 p.m. to Friday May 10 at 7 a.m. on the following roads: rue de Siam, rue Colbert, rue Parmentier, place Wilson, place de la Liberté and rue Jean-Jaurès.

Six months in prison and €7,500 fine

“The organization of a gathering of this type is punishable by the sanctions provided for by article 431-9 of the Penal Code and punishable by six months of imprisonment and a fine of €7,500; participation in such an event is punishable by a fine provided for in article R.644-4 of the same code. Such gatherings create risks for personal safety and require the use of very substantial public resources to deal with them,” warns the prefect of Finistère, calling for responsibility and respect for these provisions. For all practical purposes, the police forces will be mobilized to ensure the maintenance of public order and compliance with the prefectural decree.
