Economy. The 250 Chinese engineers and workers will ultimately not be welcomed in Cléty, a village in Pas-de-Calais

The announcement in mid-April of the arrival of Chinese technicians in bungalows for two years had raised questions among the residents of Cléty (Pas-de-Calais). The arrival of the 250 Chinese employees is not in question but another location seems to be under consideration to accommodate them. this will not be in Cléty, assures Mayor Serge Lavogez who informed his residents by means of posters.

It is through a leaflet distributed by the town hall that the Clétyciennes have heard the news: the small village of 700 souls will not, ultimately, welcome the oChinese specialized workers expected in September to build the new EQIOM cement kiln in Lumbres.

Once a philosopher, the mayor of Cléty, Serge Lavogez, does not hide the fact that he was relieved last week when the president of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Lumbres (CCPL) announced to him that the project had been stopped. A reasonable decision according to him given the costs and logistical implications: “250 workers on 11,000 m², building 150 bungalows, sanitation…”

However, the industrial project has not been abandoned; it remains crucial for the future of the cement plant and therefore for the local economy.

The hypothesis of partial reception of Chinese workers, in a campsite at Audincthun, 10 km further south, was raised. Without the mayor of Aundinthun Samuel Dubelloy, contacted by telephone, confirming, nor Jean-Luc Duflos, the owner of the campsite, who assures that “nothing is done” even if he “has the possibility” to house a good number of the people concerned in different infrastructures.

When requested, the CCPL did not respond to our request.
