He educated millions of French people thanks to his show “Apostrophes”: the presenter and writer Bernard Pivot passed away this Monday, 6 Mayi. The man of letters is died at the age of 89 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, announced his daughter. A book in one hand, his pair of glasses in the other, Bernard Pivot had also traveled France to our home in Périgord for his show “Memories of a Headscratcher.” It’s been eight years since he performed at the Fabrique de Saint-Astier cultural center. A passage which marked the public, but also its elected officials.

“He had found out about our town”

When meeting the public, he told his anecdotes from life and television. “I remember the year 2015, it was our first cultural season,” remembers the mayor of Saint-Astier, Elisabeth Marty. Although impressed by his elegance and culture, Pivot remained an unpretentious man, says the councilor. “When we welcome the artists, it is customary that just before the show, we chat over a little dish. It’s really someone refined. I remember his extreme kindness, his warmth and what particularly touched me was that he had learned about our town. I found it very elegant on his part. There was no balance of power. He was charming with everyone, charming during rehearsals, charming with the agents. Truly, she was a beautiful person.”

If the mayor does not remember Bernard Pivot’s meal that evening, she assures us: he was a bon vivant. The writer was indeed a lover of good wine and humor.

So, his disappearance, “it’s a little piece of France that is disappearing little by little”, regrets Elisabeth Marty. “All these artists who have a perfect command of the French language, we are losing them.”
