Municipal elections: residents discover that they are candidates by seeing… electoral posters

Dhe residents of Lessines discovered that they were candidates for the municipal elections by discovering their faces on Défi electoral posters, reports RTBF. However, they claim to have never given their agreement to be on a list.

An “unwilling candidate” explains having participated in a meeting on a project for animals. She was asked to sign a document, which she thought was a simple petition.

The lists have already been submitted and the names of the people concerned will appear on the ballot papers on October 13.

The Lessines municipal office confirms that “several people discovered with astonishment that they appeared as candidates on an electoral list”. Those involved are encouraged to file complaints for “undermining democratic principles”.

The head of the Défi à Lessines list, Guy Francq, disputes the facts: “It’s no joke to put yourself on a list. You must clearly mark ‘read and approved’ and sign the document. »

“But people are less and less respectful of the commitments they make,” he continues. And a lady who is a trader said to herself that it could be detrimental to her to be on the list, so she gave up. Problem: it was too late, the lists had been submitted,” he laments.

At the national level, Défi said it “takes the matter very seriously”. An internal investigation must determine whether there has been abuse of the party at the local level.
