Upper Corsica: the Costa Verde wants to diversify its future economic fabric

Continue the development of the economic activity of the Costa Verde by creating activity zones welcoming diverse and promising sectors: this is the whole challenge that the community of communesin close collaboration with theCorsican economic development agency (Adec). “We have two objectivesexplains Marilyne Frati Renosi, deputy director at the territorial development center. The first is of course to continue to structure our tourism sector which is essential to our territory. However, we do not want to be dependent on it. Therefore, we need to develop other sectors which are not necessarily established on the island and which would give us added value. In this sense, thehe support from Adec is essential and essential to the development of the Costa Verde. Its expertise brings us certain added value in terms of legitimacy, engineering and financial support.r to allow our territory to stand out in the years to come come.”

Land that just needs to be exploited

And to do this, the Costa Verde has a major asset: a land availablecurrently unused, and just waiting to be exploited again. “These are buildings that need to be rehabilitated ecological standards, reports the co-head of the territorial development division. In addition to the potential new businessesvsThese structures can also allow us to welcome doctors and ofother professionalsante.”

But before addressing the future of the territory’s economic fabric, the time had come to balance sheet, a few days ago, for both partners. In 2022, one hundred and sixty businesses have been developed in the Costa Verde territory. In comparison, one hundred and nineteen structures were created in 2013, an increase of almost 35% in just over ten years.

Invest in other sectors

The data was collected by Adec via its economic observation service, Corsica Statistica. If many of these firms were created in the commerce, accommodation and catering sector (nearly 23%), those responsible for the community of municipalities now want to invest in other sectors. “Our young people tend to pursue studies in the technical, technological and sustainable development sectorscontinues Marilyne Frati Renosi. In a few years, they will arrive on the labor market with know-how that they will not be able to put into practice if we do not give them the opportunity. Investing in this sector, or even that of artificial intelligence for example, and thus organize business incubators. This is one of our ambitionss.”

Finding alternatives to tourism

As for the Corsican economic development agency and its president, we are also on the same wavelength. “Developing an activity that is not linked to the summer season is essentialbelieves Alexandre Vinciguerra. The idea is not to put aside this growth industrybut to find alternatives that can be complementary and allow the territory of the Costa Verde to create jobs or support the development of existing businessesntes.”

It is for this reason that the organization recently supported a well-known and recognized company in the region. For more than twenty years, Casart offers its customers the creation of tailor-made fireplaces and a marble service.

“Zero long-term unemployed” objective

As part of its development projectthe firm extended its manufacturing site and purchased new machines. “This support will allow us to meet an increasingly growing demandconsiders Olivier Franchi, its manager. It also contributed to the recruitment of two people who were unemployed and who were trained for two qualified jobs.ies.” Enough to give ideas to those responsible for the community of municipalities. Because the other flagship project to which the intercommunality is committed relates to economic development and requires the support of the institution controlled by the Community of Corsica. The project in question is an experimental program, supported by the statenamed “Territory of zero long-term unemployment” and aiming, as its name indicates, to fight against exclusion on a territorial scale. We applied to hold the authorization which could allow us to invest in this projectrelates Marilyn Frati Renosi. We should have a return by July. We would like to create around fifty jobs, and why not in the circular economy. The challenge is to show that with the mobilization of an entire territory, it is possible to offer sustainable employment to all the people who were private.”
