The Swiss hotel industry continued to record an increase in overnight stays in March, according to provisional figures from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) published on Monday.

The Swiss hotel industry recorded 3.3 million overnight stays in March, which corresponds to an increase of 3.9% compared to the same period of the previous year. Foreign visitors booked 1.6 million nights, an increase of 6.6%. German tourists were the most numerous (376,546), followed by Americans (199,453) and English (152,542).

Indigenous tourism was not left out either. Residents generated 1.7 million overnight stays, up 1.5%.

At the municipal level, Zurich takes the lion’s share, with 283,274 overnight stays, all origins combined, followed by Zermatt (187,415). First French-speaking commune in the ranking and third overall, Geneva records 175,294 overnight stays.

Over the first three months of the year, Swiss hotels recorded 9.8 million overnight stays, a figure up 3.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. With 4.5 million overnight stays, foreign visitors increased by 6.7%. The evolution of indigenous tourism is less pronounced. With 5.2 million overnight stays, the increase is only 0.6%.

In 2023, the sector had recorded more than 41 million overnight stays. This figure represented an increase of 9.2% compared to 2022.
