Three years later, the nonuplets born in the Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca are “all doing very well”, their father told RFI radio. On May 4, 2021, a young Malian aged 25, Halima Cissé, originally from the city of Timbuktu, gave birth by cesarean section to nine babies, five girls and four boys.

“Really everything is going very well overall. In terms of health, they are all doing very well,” adds the father, Abdelkader Arby.

The mother had to be transferred from Bamako to Casablanca for follow-up more adapted to the risks of this multiple pregnancy. During the ultrasound, doctors detected only seven babies. They were surprised to see nine during the cesarean delivery.

The parents are supported by nannies, housekeepers and other relatives in their house made available by the Malian government since December 2022.

This Moroccan medical feat mobilized a team of more than 30 people, including three pediatricians, three intensivists and Doctor Mourad Yazid, an obstetrician-gynecologist who supervised her delivery, with operating assistants and midwives. A complex operation during which surgeons were able to extract five girls and four boys who weighed between 500 grams and 1 kg.
