Mobilization against transphobia and fascism: a rally in Dijon on May 5, 2024

Different collectives have issued an urgent call for mobilization this Sunday, May 5, 2024 against what they describe as an ongoing transphobic and fascist offensive. The meeting is set for 4 p.m. on Place Darcy in Dijon.

A climate of growing transphobia is currently plaguing the country according to organizers, accompanied by an unprecedented escalation of violence, week after week. This alarming movement has taken an even darker turn with proposed laws from the right and the far right, aimed at hindering the transitions of minors and criminalizing the doctors who support them. At the same time, a controversial book entitled “Transmania” written by Dora Moutot and Marguerite Stern is the subject of over-media coverage, thus contributing to this toxic atmosphere. For the mobilized collectives, it is crucial to recognize this wave of transphobia as a fascist attack.

After the historic struggles for the right to abortion and against reactionary movements such as the Manif pour Tous, the specter of fascism resurfaces, this time targeting the trans community in the name of the so-called “protection of life”. For the organizers of the rally, it is imperative to understand that trans people do not die because of their gender identity, but rather as a result of the violence perpetrated against them, whether through the denial of their existence or through suppression. of their rights.

This rise in transphobic intolerance takes place in an international context where conservative and far-right forces are converging in a concerted offensive against the fundamental right to bodily autonomy. Whether it is reproductive rights or the rights of trans people, these retrograde attacks threaten the meager progress made so far. From France to the United States, via Russia, the United Kingdom, Quebec, Italy, Norway, Finland and Switzerland, this anti-trans offensive is becoming one of the major axes of the reactionary agendas for the coming years.

While the Macron government is dismantling public services according to the organizers, promoting a policy of demographic rearmament on the national territory and carrying out colonialist demographic control policies, particularly in Mayotte where it encourages the sterilization of women, it is imperative to build a collective response with the entire social, feminist and LGBTQIAP+ movement.

The gathering planned for this Sunday, May 5, 2024 in Dijon, on Place Darcy at 4 p.m., is intended to be a determined response to the systemic transphobia that is plaguing our societies. For the organizers, the fight for reproductive rights (abortion, contraception, PMA) and the rights linked to transition are one, constituting a historic demand for the right to freely dispose of one’s body.
