French Jews experienced the arrival of the Nazis to power as a new Dreyfus affair. Even if, in the 1930s, France was still a powerful bulwark, their conception of Europe and their own condition were turned upside down. A persistent image presents them as incredulous and passive in the face of Hitler. But could they foresee the unprecedented? What means of action were available to them to counter the disastrous promises and decisions of the Nazis who now held Germany under their control?
