Michaël Guigou leaves Nîmes: “A double project with the Federation”

“What made you decide to leave USAM Nîmes, where you finished your playing career (2019-2022) and began your career path?
The desire to give new impetus to my career linked to personal ambitions, certain proposals and then a certain reality of life because I drive more than two hours a day (he lives in Montpellier). It has steered me toward things that I think I will thrive in.

There is a dual project with the Federation: a role of support for the French youth teams, to share my experience as a former international, and as an ambassador with other former or current internationals on various subjects which will be defined gradually. I am also going to get involved in two companies with two former friends from Marseille sports studies, one on training for companies and the other on an application serving athletes.

What will you have left of these five years in Nîmes?
There were three first as a player, with a third place in the first season (interrupted by Covid in 2019-2020), something quite exceptional given the current top trio with Nantes, Montpellier and Paris, and the club’s return to the European Cup. I just regret that Covid prevented me from taking full advantage of the excitement around the club.

And this year, there is the historic journey with the young people from the training center that I am supporting (currently 2nd in Nationale 1) in my first role as a coach alongside Grégory Arrivet, with whom I was at university in Montpellier and who shares my passion for transmission. I discovered lots of new roles, also as an advisor to David (Tebib, the president), on the relationship with partners, recruitment… These are rich experiences.

“It’s cool to support young people during an important moment in their development”

We will therefore very quickly find you among the French youth teams.
My commitment with USAM will end on July 1st. But from this weekend, I will join the staff of Guillaume Joli’s French U17 team, who agreed to invite me as an assistant, a guide, to share with the players and staff around a Mediterranean Championship in Turkey .

I have already completed a few internships with them in recent years. It’s cool to support young people during an important moment in their mental and physical development. This is one of the most beautiful moments I have experienced in the tricolor jersey, the first training courses, the first Marseillaises… It will be support and sharing of experience. No regularity is defined in the long term, it is something that will be built. »
