Trash cans, construction boards and crates are piled up on the square. A fire is lit. Around 6 p.m., the firefighters arrived for the first time but did not intervene. An hour and a half later, they returned, this time escorted by CRS to put out the flames.

Lacrymos at Place Sainte-Anne

The police used tear gas on several occasions to evacuate the premises while they were subjected to projectiles from demonstrators still present. Around 8:30 p.m., there were only around a hundred people left on Place Sainte-Anne, where they were trying to relight a fire.

This is far from the first time that May 1st has ended in clashes in the center of Rennes. Last year, in the midst of the movement against pension reform, Labor Day also ended in clashes, after a demonstration bringing together more than 10,000 people.
