Dijon metropolis: free kits to save water

Dijon metropolis: free kits to save water
Dijon metropolis: free kits to save water

This is a first in France on this scale: the Dijon metropolis will provide all of its residents with free kits to save water! Kits for the 130,000 households in the metropolitan area. The community wants to continue its efforts, involving residents because the stakes are high with climate change and repeated droughts. With the increase in the population in the metropolis, we must continue our efforts and engage residents.

To collect this kit, you must first register on a platform and obtain an appointment to pick it up. This is therefore a voluntary approach. Inscriptions on a dedicated site and the withdrawal will take place from June 1st. Inside this kit, we find two aerators to put on the sink faucets in the kitchenand the sink in the bathroom, and then a shower head which will reduce the water flow.

Tap water consumption reduced by half

It is reduce everyone’s consumption explains Antoine Hoareau, vice-president of the Dijon metropolis in charge of water: “As a general rule a tap consumes 15 liters of water per minute, with this foamer we go down to six liters of water per minute. So you see that we can make a very significant saving when we wash our hands, when we wash vegetables, when you do the dishes, or when you take a shower”.

It won’t lower your water bill but it’s still interesting for purchasing power continues the elected official: “we consume less water so that means less water billed, and above all it means less water to heat, therefore saving on gas or electricity”. And all this thanks to a very simple process explained by Julien Mialon, the general director of Odivea, which manages the water of the Dijon metropolis: “it’s a kind of small sieve that fits into the tap and slows down the water pressure”.

A free system on a voluntary basis

60,000 kits have already been ordered, the metropolis will complete depending on the success of this first phase. The desire displayed by the Dijon metropolis is to encourage the commitment of residents, the system is free but you have to come and get it. 34 collection points are planned in all the municipalities of the metropolis (including 11 points in Dijon). You must have proof of address to collect them once the order has been placed.

The overall cost of this operation amounts to 800,000 euros entirely borne by the operators of Dijon Métropole, the water and sanitation delegatees, there is therefore no no additional cost for residents. Those who wish can also volunteer for a study on the effectiveness of this measure, to know water consumption before and after, thanks to remote reading meters.
