ENVIRONMENT: A national first for Dijon Métropole by distributing water consumption reduction kits to 130,000 households

“Each liter of water that we do not consume at home is a liter of water that we will not collect from groundwater,” explained Antoine Hoareau this Tuesday morning during the press conference launching the Optim’eau operation…

Dijon Métropole, known for its commitment to preserving the environment, is taking a new step in its ecological journey. With Optim’eau, an unprecedented operation in France, the Dijon metropolis aims to provide water-saving kits to all households, in a resolute approach to combating the waste of this precious resource.

Dijon Métropole, under the aegis of François Rebsamen, mayor of Dijon and president of Dijon Métropole, represented by Antoine Hoareau, deputy mayor and vice-president of Dijon Métropole in charge of water and sanitation, announced this Tuesday morning during a press conference, engage in a vast operation to distribute water-saving kits. In partnership with water and sanitation delegates Odivea, Suez and Sogedo, this initiative aims to raise awareness among metropolitan households about the preservation of drinking water resources.

Water, as an essential marker of climate change, is at the heart of the concerns of this initiative. Extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, are becoming more frequent and more intense, underscoring the urgency for action. The year 2023, the hottest year ever recorded by the World Meteorological Organization, is irrefutable proof of this. “Each liter of water that we do not consume at home is a liter of water that we will not collect from groundwater,” explains Antoine Hoareau.

Optim’eau represents much more than a simple distribution of kits. It is a call to action for every citizen, an invitation to adopt simple but significant actions to reduce their daily water consumption. The kits, fitted to kitchen faucets, bathroom faucets and showers, are offered free of charge to all households in the metropolis. However, the vice-president of the metropolis insists on the citizen initiative: “We are not doing a massive distribution so that it ends up in a cupboard. We are following a voluntary approach on the part of the inhabitants of the Metropolis. »

The “Optim’eau” water saving kit, presented to the press this Tuesday, April 30, 2024, will be distributed from June 1, 2024. Made up of a foamer for the sink faucet, a foamer for the sink of the bathroom and a shower head equipped with a flexible hose and an economical ring, this kit will allow each household to reduce its flow and improve its daily water management. “We didn’t take first prize, we chose solid material so that it would last over time! » continues Antoine Hoareau. Thanks to collaboration with the delegatees Odivea, Sogedo and Suez, Dijon Métropole guarantees citizens the possibility of reducing their water consumption without sacrificing their comfort. These devices, by mixing air with water, maintain pressure while reducing flow, thus ensuring efficient and pleasant use of water.

Simple actions add to this initiative. Detecting and repairing leaks, reducing shower times, using the dishwasher at full capacity, installing rainwater collectors and drip irrigation systems are all recommended practices to save water and preserve this vital resource…

To obtain their Optim’eau kit, residents of Dijon Métropole can register on the dedicated platform. The withdrawal of the kits will begin on June 1, 2024, offering everyone the opportunity to actively contribute to water conservation.
