In his message, the King expresses to Mr. Diomaye Faye and, through him, to the family of the deceased and to the entire Senegalese people, his sincere condolences and the expression of his deep compassion.

Senegal, as well as the entire international community, are in mourning following the death of Amadou Mahtar Mbow, former Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

As a sign of tribute, King Mohammed VI sent a message of condolences to the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, saluting an exceptional career and life strongly anchored in the quest for justice, equality and fraternity. Born on March 20, 1921 in Dakar, Amadou Mahtar Mbow made history with his unwavering commitment to education and culture, and left an indelible mark on the international political and cultural spheres.

His journey began in the 1940s, when he pursued higher studies in . After serving as a teacher, he returned to Senegal where his intellectual prestige propelled him onto the political scene.

His role as Director-General of UNESCO, a position he held from 1974 to 1987, was a high point of his career. The first African to head the agency, he left his mark on a period marked by the debate around the New World Information and Communication Order.

Under his leadership, UNESCO explored innovative areas to rebalance information flows between North and South, a cause that reflected his vision of a more equitable world.

Amadou Mahtar Mbow’s commitment to intercultural dialogue and the promotion of peace has earned him recognition beyond many borders. He received various international honors and, until his last days, inspired numerous educational and cultural policies across the African continent.

Also an eminent member of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, Mbow contributed to a better understanding between African cultures, confirming his stature as a bridge between Africa and the world.
