Podor, April 29 (APS) – The Deputy Prefect of Podor, Ousmane Sidibé, proceeded, this Monday, to the installation of the office of the Local Artisanal Fishing Council in the presence of a delegation from the Fisheries Directorate continental.
Ibrahima Maal was appointed head of the Local Artisanal Fishing Council for a two-year term. He was elected by delegates from the different municipalities.
The structure brings together all the players in the inland fishing sector to “revitalize and better manage fishery resources”, explained Ndèye Mbeugué Gaye Fall, head of the Regeneration division at the Inland Fisheries Directorate.
“This is a major change desired by the ministerial department to involve all stakeholders taking into account the context marked by climate change and its effects on continental fishing resources,” said Ms. Fall in the presence of the head of the departmental Fisheries service. , by Serge Emile Ntap.
“The texts which organized the Fisheries Councils date from 1963,” she recalled. “During this period, fishing generated a little more than 30,000 tonnes, currently fishermen are struggling to obtain 6,000 tonnes of fish all year round,” noted the head of the Regeneration division at the Inland Fisheries Directorate.
The Local Artisanal Fishing Council is an entity that now involves all stakeholders, explained Ms. Fall. ”From the fisherman to the carpenter, including the processor, the fish merchant, the fish farmer, everyone is concerned by the management of fisheries resources. This is why all trades are invited to take part in the assembly,” said Ms. Fall.
