The mayor of Geneva is aiming for a second term on the Administrative Council. His party will position itself on June 18.

At 63, the mayor of Geneva wants to serve a second term on the Administrative Council of Geneva. “I asked for time to think. I made the decision to stand as a candidate for my party for a new mandate,” he explains. The elected official says he is “full of motivation”.

In his view, in the event of re-election, Alfonso Gomez wants to continue the greening of the and the renovation of housing. Asked about the good results of the City (almost 200 million surplus in 2023), he does not envisage a reduction in the additional cent in the event of re-election: “The profit that we have made over the last two years is concentrated on a certain type of business with high volatility. We must therefore remain attentive, he explains. We also have significant debt and needs for the lower middle class. A tax cut, as proposed today, mainly benefits high incomes. This seems unfair to us, especially since it seems important to us to maintain investments, support for the middle class and, if we can temporarily lower the debt, it is worth it.

Perler case: “The Administrative Council is functioning and has taken a number of measures. It is the most important”

Alfonso Gomez wants to take back public space. “Today we are suffering from noise. Automotive mobility must begin to give way. This is what city dwellers are asking for. 45% of households in the City of Geneva do not have a car.” On the subject of purchasing power, he proposes solutions at the nursery level and calls for help to SMEs.

Asked about the case of his colleague Frédérique Perler, who has not clarified his intentions, the candidate for candidacy is not going to “supersede (his) decision”. “You may think it’s rhetoric, but it’s his choice and his freedom. It would be inappropriate for me to comment on the various candidates within the party,” he slips. Returning to the matter of hiring, he recalls the measures of the Administrative Council, as well as its opposition to the Parisian’s commitment. “The Council is functioning, it has taken a certain number of measures, for me this is the most important,” he concludes.

Former socialist, Alfonso Gomez joined the Geneva Greens in 1999. Administrative advisor between 2013 and 2020, he was head of his group from 2016 to 2018. He then became administrative advisor in charge of the Department of Finance, Environment and accommodation. Alfonso Gomez was also president of the Pro Vélo Genève association between 2017 and 2020. The Greens in the City of Geneva will choose their ticket on June 18. Former Municipal Council President Uzma Khamis Vannini also entered the race.
