Update April 28, 2024 at 9:00 p.m.
It’s not every year that we see snow falling across Canada just before the month of May arrives. The situation is rather unusual. Forecasts.
In short :
Cold atmospheric background
It’s his fault. An arctic air dome will play spoilsport over the next few days.
This mass of cold air, which will descend over the vast majority of Canadian territory, will blow a winter wind from Monday. In total, no less than eight provinces will have to suffer the consequences of such an atmospheric context.
Late snow
It’s as if winter doesn’t want to go away completely: this drop in mercury, combined with low pressure systems, will bring precipitation in the form of snow at the start of the week to the four corners of the country.
In places, there is even talk of possible snow accumulations. In British Columbia, northwestern Ontario and northern Quebec, moderate snow could fall at times.
A little further south, traces of snow are possible on the Gaspésie side from Monday to Tuesday.
In the almanac
What makes the situation exceptional is the fact that snow will return from one end of the country to the other during the same period, so late. However, it is not unusual to see snow in May. On average, Gaspé and St. John’s record 5 cm and 4 cm respectively during the month of May.
