It is the future of a sumptuous and no less historic residence that was discussed during the last municipal council, on Monday April 22, 2024. The Maison d’Auber de Peyrelongue, located at 37 and 39 rue Paul-Vergnes in Marmande, dates from the 11th-12th century.

It is moreover “about the oldest house in the city that we have to date,” contextualizes -Laure Gasser.

The oldest house in town

Originally, this 154 m building2 is a fortified house built on the glacis of the first city wall between the 11th and 12th centuries. The Maison d’Auber de Peyrelongue represents, in a way, the historic heart of Marmande. She belonged to the Auber de Peyrelongue family, “one of the oldest in the city”, says Marie Bonnauron. THE last marquis of the family died in 1982. Note that the residence was purchased by the municipality by deliberation of April 12, 1910.

“This building, on three floors, is a historical marker of Marmande and it seems essential to us to preserve this building by registering it as a Historic Monument and not classifying it. » Subtlety exists, and it must be taken into account. What is it precisely?

An inscription on the Historical Monuments

“On the one hand, registration is lighter than a ranking. On the other hand, if one day the municipality decides to carry out work, and even if this will be subject to the scientific control of the Drac (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs), the municipality will not be obliged to call on the competence of ‘A approved heritage architect“, explains Marie Bonnauron, confident in passing that “ rankings are becoming more and more difficult to obtain today“.

The purpose of this registration? “Preserve this monument, in the best conditions, in order to be able – later – to have a project within it. »

The project is on track. The request will be made to the regional heritage and architecture commission and the instruction time is between 18 months and 2 years.
