Dakar, April 26 (APS) – The film “Camp de Thiaroye” by Senegalese directors Ousmane Sembene and Thierno Faty Sow was selected in the “Cannes classics” category of the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival (France), scheduled for May 14 to 25, APS learned from the organizers of this event.

This film, banned upon release in France, looks back on the massacre of Senegalese riflemen in 1944.

Returning from the Second World War, they were executed after demanding financial allowances and allowances in a military camp in Thiaroye.

It was produced by Senegal, Tunisia and Algeria in 1988. Its restored copy will be viewed in the presence of Margaret Bodde, general director of ”The Film Foundation”, indicate the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival, revealing on their site the list of films selected for the Cannes Classics.

This year, 12 restored films will be screened at “Cannes Classics” which is celebrating its twenty years of existence.

The film ”Camp de Thiaroye”, 2 hours 33 minutes, was restored with the ”Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation” by ”The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project” and ”Cineteca di Bologna” at the laboratory ”L’Immagine Ritrovata” in association with the Tunisian Ministry of Culture and that of Culture and Historical Heritage.

The note accompanying the announcement thanks the Tunisian director Mohamed Callouf, who facilitated access to the film.
