Camels, dromedaries, alpacas, llamas… The camelid parade was to take place this Saturday, April 20, 2024 in the heart of the capital. But the prefecture banned this event organized by Christian Schoettl, mayor (without label) of Janvry (Essonne) and passionate about these animals, reports The Parisian .

The animals were originally supposed to parade on the Champs-Élysées and the Champ de Mars. “We offered the organizer the de Boulogne or as an alternative route”, explains the prefecture. Christian Schoettl indicated that he intended to file a legal appeal to challenge this decision.

A prefectural decree of this Thursday, April 18 finally restricts the choice to the Bois de Vincennes: “The parade could be held this April 20, 2024 in the Bois de Vincennes with a gathering at 12 p.m. on the esplanade of the Château de Vincennes, departure of the procession at 2 p.m. » A “wandering” is possible in specific avenues until 6 p.m.

Marching through the woods “makes no sense”

The elected official has been preparing this event for more than two years, taking advantage of the International Year of Camels decreed by the UN in 2024. He believes that the alternative proposed by the prefecture “ no sense “ and ensures with Blue Paris that these animals are “very placid” and do not represent any safety hazard.

This parade was strongly criticized, in particular by animal rights associations. The city of Paris and the town hall of the 7the borough were also opposed to the organization of this event.
