Geneva Puppets: A festival inside and outside the walls

The Puppets come out of their box to better bring you back there

Published today at 5:12 p.m.

From Tuesday April 16 until Sunday April 28, three puppet shows are on show across the city. During the week, they travel from foster homes to nursing homes, from schools to day centers, from bars to hospitals, meeting audiences who do not have spontaneous access to theaters. When the weekend comes, with their trestles ready, they return to the fold on rue Rodo, followed by the faithful and curious people enticed along the way, for whom they reserve a whole package of treats.

It looks like a fable by La , doesn’t it? “2 beats 3 movements” actually designates the new mini-festival imagined by Isabelle Matter in a desire for back-and-forth dialogue with the city. To organize it, the one who pulls the strings Geneva Puppet Theater joined forces with the cultural mediation association Destination 27in charge of coordinating the celebrations with the structures outside the walls.

From Piaf to Presley, from Monroe to Barbara, the “Manipophone” muppets include the Frères Jacques quartet.

Concretely, the three pieces put into orbit from Tuesday to Friday are visible on the TMG stage several times a day on Saturdays and Sundays April 20 and 21, then April 27 and 28. They have been selected to offer a broad vision of puppetry art, by combining various techniques, by addressing different age groups and by relying on devices that are easy to assemble and then dismantle quickly.

For children from 3 years old, the Théâtre L’Articule tackles in two “Small Variations” tender and poetic the theme of filiation: Fatna Djahra and her Geneva team interfere via circus and object theater in the pleasures shared between grandparents and grandchildren. The table puppet from the hexagonal company Portés disappears addresses a “Little Gallery of Decline” at the top, 7 years and over: the dilapidated critters of this animal trilogy observe evolution through the lens of absurd metaphysics. Finally, “The Manipophone” by the French The Burning Doll promises everyone from 9 years old a nostalgic singing tour performed by muppets with the faces of Jacques Brel or Joséphine Baker.

But “2 temps 3 Mouvements” does not stop at touring its shows. Throughout the Hugo-de-Senger School, the TMG en fête also offers a host of free activities, which range from workshops to guided tours including the stage open to anyone who is tempted to show off his manipulative skills. As a bonus, a traveling puppet will crisscross the courtyard, loaded with three short forms, “Le Chalet”, “Wafel et Bretzel” and “As long as there are cabins”, to be picked up quickly and well.
