YouTube Announces Groundbreaking Partnership to Broadcast the Paralympic Games

The platform will be able to broadcast the events free of charge in dozens of countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

YouTube has signed a groundbreaking partnership with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to live stream the Games for free in dozens of countries across Asia, Latin America and Africa, the company announced Wednesday.

The initiative includes in particular: “nearly 1,400 hours of live broadcasts (…) covering all 22 Paralympic , including the opening and closing ceremonies”YouTube said in a statement. The live broadcast will be available in countries including Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Indonesia, Chile, Colombia, Canada and Japan.

France is not among the countries concerned, France Télévisions having acquired the exclusivity of the broadcasting on French territory of the Paralympic Games in Paris which begin on Wednesday and will be held until September 8. In total, YouTube will offer in support of the 160 official broadcasters, free access in 175 markets and territories around the world.

The platform, which is owned by Google, will also broadcast more than 1,200 clips and highlights of the competitions every day on the Paralympics channel. This partnership should make it possible to “maximizing the global reach of the most transformative sporting event on the planet, engaging new audiences around Paralympian performances”said Mike Peters, IPC’s CEO, quoted in the press release.
