Participants and spectators of the tournament at the veteran fencing circuit in Faches-Thumesnil, in the north of France, were treated to a funny surprise. Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden, was among the competing athletes.
The man with 130 million sold therefore mingled with the amateurs, who still had a very good level. The Faches-Thumesnil tournament is one of the most famous in Europe for veterans. It attracts fencers from more than 20 different countries to offer a challenging picture.
So what was the voice of a world-famous group doing at such an event? Bruce Dickinson has been passionate about fencing since he started the sport at age 13. He has even trained with the Great Britain Olympic team in the past. He also founded Duellist, his own fencing equipment company, in 1988.
-To secure the arrival of such a star, the help of the municipal police had been mandated. However, according to the Voix du Nord, the presence of the Briton did not unleash the crowds. Only a few people would have recognized him.
At 66 years old, Bruce Dickinson has proven that his skills as a swordsman are still very much alive. He finished 13th in his category, out of 31 participants, after being eliminated in the round of 16 by Frenchman Pascal Jolyot (66), gold medalist in team foil at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.
